Cora Gregory Sluss

Cora Gregory Sluss, age 91, a resident of Knoxville and formerly of Oliver Springs, passed away Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at the Island Home Park Health and Rehab Center in Knoxville.

Mrs. Sluss was born Nov. 1, 1921, in the Cades Cove Community in Blount County. When she was seven years old, she moved to the family farm in Sevier County. Following her marriage to her late husband, Charles Sluss, she moved to Oak Ridge, where her husband was employed in the development of the Manhattan Project.

She was a faithful Christian and a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Oliver Springs, where she was very active in the Joy Sunday School class. She enjoyed working as a volunteer at the Mt. Pisgah Print Shop when she was physically able.

Mrs. Sluss was employed for more than 18 years as a cemetery counselor for several area cemeteries including Greenwood Cemetery, Oak Ridge Memorial Park, Anderson Memorial Gardens, Highland Memorial Park, and Lynnhurst Cemetery.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by a infant son, Walter Fred Sluss; by a daughter, Mary Sue Masters; by a grandson, James Sluss; by her parents, Walter A. Gregory and Frankie Sparks Gregory; by her stepmother, Mary Roberts Gregory; by brothers, Tom and Connie Gregory; and by a sister, Coza Gregory Clark.

She is survived by sons, John Charles Sluss of Decatur, Ga., David J. Sluss and wife Deborah of Knoxville, and Danny W. Sluss and wife Donna of Knoxville; by grandchildren, Stephen Masters, Paul Masters, Lisa Brigance, Nathan Sluss, Kevin Sluss, Clifton Sluss, Jason Sluss, and Hillary Dziminski; by great-grandchildren, Tucker Masters, Truman Masters, Katie Carter, Kaleb, Sophie, and Audrey Sluss; and by a son-in-law, John Masters of The Woodlands, Texas.

She is also survived by nieces, nephews, extended family, and a host of special friends.

The family received friends Sunday, Oct. 6, between 3 and 4 p.m. at Sharp Funeral Home. The funeral service followed at 4 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Garvan Walls officiating.

Burial and graveside services were held Monday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m. at Anderson Memorial Gardens.
