Michael Whitaker
A lunchtime lecture next week will feature a discussion of a recent International Atomic Energy Agency training program that was hosted at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Michael Whitaker, group leader of the ORNL International Safeguards Group in the Nuclear Security and Isotope Technology Division, will lead the presentation.
The IAEA training program was for more than 40 nuclear safeguards professionals and regulatory officials representing more than 30 nations. They spent two weeks at ORNL to expand their knowledge for conducting their vital work around the world, a press release said.
Whitaker’s public presentation starts at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the University of Tennessee Resource Center on Oak Ridge Turnpike, and the lecture begins at noon. It’s the monthly luncheon lecture meeting of Friends of ORNL.
The press release said Whitaker has been involved in international safeguards for more than 30 years and has worked at the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant (ORGDP), Y-12 National Security Complex, and ORNL. Specific projects in his current job include developing inspection and evaluation tools for the IAEA, conducting training for IAEA inspectors, coordinating the application of IAEA safeguards at U.S. nuclear facilities, and assisting countries prepare for and implement IAEA safeguards at their nuclear facilities. Whitaker is senior member of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management and has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s in engineering management, both from the University of Tennessee.
The UT Resource Center is the white-colored building at 1201 Oak Ridge Turnpike (State Highway 95) between Taco Bell and Applebee’s at the intersection of the Turnpike and Rutgers Ave (at Traffic Light #7).
