Norris Dam and the Museum of Appalachia were among the Top 10 attractions published by USA Today in an I-75 guide to the best stops between Detroit and Atlanta.

Reporter Ellen Creager of the Detroit Free Press drove 890 miles between Detroit and Atlanta during a four-day period and stopped at 32 places suggested by readers. The stops had to be within 2.5 miles of the freeway, which eliminated some potential places to visit such as Chattanooga.

The Hampton Inn in Caryville, which is north of Lake City, was ranked as one of three great places to stay, and a mountainous stretch of highway near Stinking Creek Road north of Caryville was ranked as one of the prettiest stretches. Knoxville was ranked the most stressful stretch.

Here are some other Tennessee highlights:

  • The area near exit 156 at Rarity Mountain Road, south of Jellico and the Tennessee-Kentucky border, was judged to be the stretch most in need of a scenic turnout. “Gorgeous sights and nowhere to get off and view them,” Creager said.
  • Several places in Tennessee are more than three miles off I-75 but came with high reader recommendations. They included Ruby Falls, Rock City, and Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga; Mayfield Dairy near Athens; and Lost Sea near Sweetwater.
