Betty Giles Stewart

Betty Giles Stewart passed away peacefully Monday, Aug. 26.

She and her husband Jim were longtime residents of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Stewart was the oldest child of Howard and Dalis Giles of Oliver Springs. She was a devoted daughter, mother, and grandmother.

She graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in English education and later earned her master’s degree in educational administration. She taught English for 35 years in junior high, high school, and college in Anderson County, Roane County, and at Tennessee Tech University.

Mrs. Stewart loved to travel, flower garden, cook, and be with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her youngest brother Jerry Giles, and her son James Michael Stewart.

She leaves behind her husband, James Stewart; daughters, Carolyn Stewart Evans and Susan Stewart Kennedy; brothers, David Giles, Jimmy Giles, and Steve Giles; sister, Patsy Giles Hensley; grandsons, Mitch Evans Jr. and Brady Evans; granddaughters, Lauren Evans Cliburn, Suzanne Evans Robinson, Stephanie Evans, Elizabeth Kennedy, Emily Kennedy, Caroline Kennedy, and Sarah Kennedy; great-grandson, Connor Cliburn; and great-granddaughters, Hensley Evans, Reagan Evans, and Elsie Cliburn.

Mrs. Stewart was a member of Central Baptist Church in Oak Ridge.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Aug. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Central Baptist Church. The funeral will follow at 8 p.m. with Rev. Glenn Ellis and Rev. Mitchell Evans Jr. officiating. The graveside service will be Friday, Aug. 30, at 10 a.m. at Anderson Memorial Gardens on Oliver Springs Highway.
