The Oak Ridge Community Band will performs its annual Labor Day concert on Monday, Sept. 2, at A.K. Bissell Park.
The free concert starts at 7 p.m. at the pavilion behind the Oak Ridge Civic Center. The public is encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for outdoor seating, and refreshments will be available for sale, a press release said.
Special guest performers will include the Oak Ridge Schools’ band directors, who will be performing New Orleans style Dixieland music. Oak Ridge High School band director Spence Milligan will play trombone with assistant conductor Mike Spirko on trumpet, Robertsville Middle School band leader Sean Greene will play tuba, and Jefferson Middle School band director Josh Bibbs will play bass clarinet. They will be joined by retired Knox County Schools band director and clarinetist Charlie Blake, whose connection to Oak Ridge Schools is his student teaching at Oak Ridge High School when Steve “Doc” Combs was band director.
Still another special guest performer at Monday evening’s concert will be the return appearance of vocalist and band member Deidre Ford, who will be singing Jerry Brubaker’s “The Ultimate Patriotic Sing-Along,” the press release said.
In addition to the guest performers, the Community Band will perform a number of entertaining tunes including “The Pink Panther,” “My Fair Lady,” “Malaguena,” a medley of Tennessee songs as “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” “Tennessee Watlz,” and every University of Tennessee Volunteer’s favorite—”Rocky Top!”
