A new nonprofit organization that helps homeless families in Anderson County will show a documentary on Friday that features families struggling after the Great Recession, the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.
The 7 p.m. screening of “American Winter,” an HBO documentary, has been organized by TORCH (Trinity Out-Reach Center of Hope). The film was produced during one winter in one American city, and it presents an “intimate snapshot of the state of the nation’s economy as it is playing out in millions of American families, and highlights the human consequences of the decline of the middle class and the fracturing of the American Dream,” a press release said.
There will be a panel discussion after the movie featuring a leading expert on homelessness.
The press release said more than 300 people have visited TORCH since its doors opened in January, and 132 of them have received resources to help them stay in their homes or obtain housing.
Friday’s movie will be shown at the Grove Theater at 123 Randolph Road in Oak Ridge, and the doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person or $25 for a couple. You can purchase tickets from any TORCH board member or online at http://www.oakridgetorch.org/events/.
Your ticket buys you popcorn, candy, three drink tickets (wine and beer only), admission to the movie “American Winter,” and admission to the panel discussion on homelessness. Visit www.oakridgetorch.org for more information.
