A group of 10 chemistry students at Oak Ridge High School placed first on the National Chemistry Olympiad Exam, a teacher said.
The 40-question exam is given to all second-year chemistry students and any first year students who want to take it, said Eddie Anderson, ORHS chemistry teacher, track coach, and science department chair. The school score is compiled by adding the Top 10 student scores.
Students are recognized for a perfect score of 400 points. This year, Jaspreet Singh at Oak Ridge High School got a perfect score, Anderson said.
A subject-area test was also given to the environmental science class this year, which placed second, Anderson said.

“It’s obviously a good result because the test is difficult enough and the kids have to not make dumb mistakes,” Anderson said.
He said Oak Ridge finished second last year by one point.
Anderson said the National Chemistry Olympiad Exam is sponsored by the National Science League, and the test is popular in California, New York, and the Northeast.
Oak Ridge students have been taking the test for about 20 years, Anderson said.
