The Anderson County Operations Committee on Monday finalized plans to place the words “In God We Trust†above all four doors of the County Courthouse in Clinton.
The motion approved Monday calls for the phrase to be emblazoned on plaques and posted above each of the four courthouse entrances.
Operations Committee members rejected a proposal to include other phrases—“Liberty and Justice for all,†“E Pluribus Unum,†and the state motto of “Agriculture and Commerce.†That proposal had been made to mitigate the county’s liability in the event a lawsuit is filed over perceived violations of the separation of church and state but again was rejected on Monday.
The full Commission is expected to vote on the issue next week.
More information will be added as it becomes available.
