ORNL researchers receive professional society honors

Three researchers from Oak Ridge National Laboratory have received appointments and honors from their respective professional societies.

ORNL’s Carol Wood has been elected to a four-year term on the board of directors of the American Board of Toxicology. She is a senior research staff member in the Environmental Sciences Division at ORNL.

Wood was elected from more than 40 nominees. Ernest McConnell, president of ToxPath Inc., a former board member who served as president of the ABT board from 1987 to 1988, nominated her for the award.

ORNL’s A.C. Buchanan III has been awarded the 2013 Henry H. Storch Award in Fuel Science for his research on the chemistry of hydrocarbon fuels. He is a member of the Chemical Sciences Division at ORNL.

The Storch Award, sponsored by the American Chemical Society’s Division of Fuel Chemistry and co-sponsored by the Elsevier Ltd., is given annually to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to research in the field of fuel science.

Buchanan will be presented with the award at the Fall National Meeting of the American Chemical Society.

ORNL’s Nina Balke has been unanimously selected by the American Ceramic Society’s board of directors to receive the society’s Robert L. Coble Award for Young Scholars. She is a researcher in the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences at ORNL.

Balke will be presented with the award at the ACerS’s 115th Annual Meeting in October.

In 2011, Balke received an early career research grant from the Office of Science to investigate the complex interplay of ionic and electron transport in battery materials.
