Hosting an international student is rewarding and fun, said Roane State Community College student exchange coordinator Emma Ellis.
“You get a different perspective, not only of the country the student is from but on the world and sometimes even on yourself,†Ellis said. “Hosting helps you grow as a person, and it’s fun.â€
Roane State is seeking families to host international students. As student exchange coordinator, Ellis works directly with host families. She and her family are also hosting a student from Ukraine during the spring semester.
“He’s just part of the family now,†Ellis said.
Host families provide a bed, meals, and a place to study. The families do not have to buy any personal items for the students. A support system composed of college staff members and other host families provide assistance, and host families receive a monthly stipend to help offset expenses.
Families may host a student for one semester or for a full year. Roane State’s international students speak English well and must meet academic standards to be part of the college’s International Education program.
“They are fun students, and they are good students,†Ellis said. “Hosting is a great experience that helps you grow as a person and a family.â€
