Roy Herron, chairman of the Tennessee Democratic Party, will be guest speaker at a Thursday meeting of the Anderson County Democratic Party.

It’s the party’s annual chili supper and potluck, and it starts at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Claxton Elementary School Cafeteria.

Herron is a former state senator who unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the Eighth Congressional District of the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2010.

Previously a State Senator from Tennessee’s 24th District, Herron sought and won the Democratic nomination as U.S. Representative for the Eighth Congressional District in 2010. He was defeated by Republican Stephen Fincher.

Those who attend the chili supper and potluck are asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share. Chili will be provided by Democratic cooks, and a $5.00 admission fee will help defray the cost of food and drinks, a press release said.

The release said Herron was first elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1986 to fill Gov. Ned McWherter’s seat. He served in the House in the 95th through 99th Tennessee General Assemblies and served in the Senate beginning in the 100th General Assembly. He was floor leader of the Senate Democratic Caucus and the chair of the Select Committee on Children and Youth. Herron did not seek re-election in 2012.

The release said Herron graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1975 and from Vanderbilt University in 1980 with a M.Div. and a J.D. In 1975 and 1976, he was a Rotary Scholar in Scotland at the University of St. Andrews. In addition to serving as State Democratic Party Chair, Herron works as an attorney, a businessman, and as adjunct faculty at Vanderbilt University.
