A light layer of snow blanketed Oak Ridge on Wednesday morning, and forecasters said regional snow showers and windy conditions will continue through this evening.
The National Weather Service in Morristown said the heaviest snowfall will occur along the mountains of southwest Virginia and east Tennessee.
Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories are in effect for much of the Ohio River valley and mid-Atlantic states, as well as for parts of the southern Appalachians.
There is a chance of snow before 1 p.m. in Oak Ridge, and rain is possible after that. The chance of precipitation is 50 percent.
Forecasters expect cloudy skies and a high near 40. Wind conditions are expected to be breezy, with gusts as high as 30 mph.
The seven-day forecast does not call for any more snow this week.
The National Weather Service said the cold front that pushed into the region last night allowed colder air to filter in, along with gusty northwest winds.
Snowfall accumulations of between one and four inches are expected in some areas, and there could be four to eight inches of snow in some East Tennessee mountain areas.
