U.S. Sen. Bob Corker on Monday said a recent nuclear test by North Korea violated international agreements and posed a threat to regional and global security.

Corker, who is a ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said the Senate unanimously passed a resolution condemning the nuclear test.

“North Korea’s recent nuclear and missile tests pose real dangers for regional and global security and will not go unchallenged by the United States or the international community,” Corker said in a press release. “Their actions also highlight the need for modernization of U.S. nuclear forces so we can maintain an effective nuclear deterrent to protect Americans and our allies in the region.”

The resolution, cosponsored by Corker, calls for implementation of new sanctions against the dictatorship in Pyongyang and additional steps by the U.S. and the international community to confront North Korea’s proliferation of nuclear and other dangerous technology, according to the press release.
