Oak Ridge National Laboratory scientist Michael Smith will give a free presentation on exploding stars and atom smashers on May 24 at the American Museum of Science and Energy.
During the lecture, find out how atom smashers are used on Earth to investigate the mysteries of exploding stars. Some of the effects discussed include cosmic cannibalism, thermonuclear traffic jams, and stellar alchemy.
The May 24 talk is the start of the 15th Annual Dick Smyser Community Lecture Series, sponsored by Friends of ORNL.
There will be a reception starting at 5:30 p.m., snacks will be served, and the lecture will start at 6:30 p.m.
Smith leads the Experimental Astrophysics Group at ORNL. He has won the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, which is the highest award given to young researchers in the United States, as well as many ORNL awards including Scientific Paper of the Year, Science Communicator of the Year, and Educational Champion.
Friends of ORNL is an organization that provides a way for members to keep in touch with co-workers, retirees, and current ORNL activities by providing the community with presentations and events.
