Join in the discussion of how you can help create a safe environment for youth at a bullying prevention seminar on Thursday, Feb. 7, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.
“Creating a Safe Environment†is the theme of the seminar focused on the impact and prevention of bullying. The community is invited to participate.
The program will include Scott Lucas, Anderson County Deputy Sheriff, speaking on “Anatomy of a Bully,†and Ande Bradford-Baker, with the Oak Ridge Boys and Girls Club, speaking on “Confronting and Preventing Bullying.†Bradford-Baker coordinates the Anti-Bullying Ambassadors at the Boys and Girls Club, and the ambassadors will present a skit on bullying.
Rev. David Lovett, pastoral assistant at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and a licensed professional counselor, will lead a brief healing service. There will be time for comments, questions and answers. Resource lists, handouts and other information will be available.
Bullying has an impact on many people, not just the person being bullied. Bystanders, defenders, supporters and even the bully are affected by this aggressive behavior.
Dan Olweus, creator of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, defines bullying as follows: “A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself.â€
The bullying prevention seminar is scheduled from 7-9 p.m. Feb. 7.
