Harriet Clayton Davis

Harriet Clayton Davis, age 82, of Oak Ridge, went to her Heavenly Home on Jan. 14.

Mrs. Davis was born Feb. 3, 1930, in Person County, N.C., to the late Daniel A. and Caroline Swanson Clayton.

As well as being a homemaker, Mrs. Davis worked in child care. She especially enjoyed working at Daniel Arthur with special needs children.

She had an intense love and concern for animals. She fed birds, squirrels, and raccoons. She never hesitated to help an animal in need, and had several dogs and cats over the years as pets. She will be missed by her pets Blackie, Baby, and Lady.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Davis is preceded in death by her husband, Earl V. Davis.

She is survived by her son, Daniel A. and his wife Lisa Davis of Powell; daughters, Darrell Anne and her husband Edwin Waldrop of Rutherfordton, N.C., and Diana L. Davis of Oak Ridge; grandchildren, Brent Blair of Laurens, S.C., and Daniel and Samuel Davis of Powell; great-grandchildren, William and Jasmine Blair of Laurens, S.C.; two sisters; and three brothers.

The family wishes to thank the Meals on Wheels Organization of Anderson County, Girling Home Health, Caris Hospice, Preferred Care, and caretakers Mary and Carie. Mrs. Davis’ children state that their mother was a private person in many ways, and when a poem was discovered that she had written for a special needs child she especially cared for, their heart was greatly touched:

“I’m big.

I have a Shovel.

I dig, dig, dig.

I can make my bed, I’m so big.

My sandbox is fun.

I have a red shovel.

I’m so big; I can dig, dig, dig.”

The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 19, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home followed by a graveside service at 3 p.m. at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Meals on Wheels of Anderson County, The Oak Ridge Animal Shelter, or The Humane Society of Anderson County.
