Local law enforcement agencies will celebrate National Police Week, May 13 through May 19, with a memorial ceremony for fallen officers in Oak Ridge on Tuesday.

The service on Tuesday, which is National Peace Officers Memorial Day, will be at the Oak Ridge Municipal Building. It’s part of next week’s National Police Week ceremonies.

A press release from the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department said the law enforcement agency has lost seven officers in the line of duty. Six were killed by gunfire and one died in an automobile accident.

Tuesday’s memorial service, which is sponsored by Chief James Akagi and the Oak Ridge Police Department, will be at 1:00 p.m. on the plaza in front of the Municipal Building.

President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726 in 1962, though it was not until May 15, 1982, that the first National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day service was held.
