The Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club recently selected John Auxier as the winner of the 2012 Service Above Self Award.
The award, presented at an October meeting, is unique because it is not given to Rotarians but instead to people or organizations that give outstanding volunteer service to the community, a press release said.
“This award is also distinctive in that it is not an annual award but is instead only given when the award committee believes there is a worthy recipient,” the release said.
This is the twelfth time that the Service Above Self Award has been given.
“It was difficult to select an award recipient this year as there were several worthy nominees,” the release said. “The Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club is very grateful for the many outstanding nominations and especially to the nominees themselves for their service to the community.”
But Auxier stood out, the release said, as someone who had a special vision, as well as “the passion, drive, forcefulness, and persistence to make that vision a reality.
“He devoted himself to his vision tirelessly and brought it to life. The 2012 Service Above Self Award is thus given to the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge with special recognition of John Auxier for his vision and dream that made the Free Medical Clinic a reality.”
The release said it took the help of many people—about 120 volunteers—to make the vision practical, functional, and strong. As of Oct. 5, the Free Medical Clinic had served 2,246 low-income people in the Oak Ridge area, providing much needed quality medical services, all voluntarily.
