On Tuesday, the League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge will host Masooma Hussaini, a graduate student in journalism at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She will share first-hand information about the destruction of human and female rights in Afghanistan after the take-over by the Taliban.
This virtual event will be held at 12 p.m. Eastern time via Zoom.
Masooma, a graduate of an Afghan college, joined the military and was sent to the United States to learn how to fly military helicopters, a press release said. After her training, she returned home and found that she was seriously discriminated against because she is a woman and a minority (Shiite Muslim). She came back to the U.S. to get an advanced degree in journalism at UT and currently lives in Knoxville.
