The citywide leaf pickup program begins Monday, Nov. 19. The schedule is printed below.
Oak Ridge officials said workers will try to follow the schedule as closely as possible, but it is a general guide and pickup dates can vary considerably from the real schedule due to the amount of leaves and weather.
Here a few guidelines for the leaf pickup program:
- Residents should place their leaves near, but not beyond, the curb. Leaves are not to be placed in the street due to possible clogging of storm drains and posing a traffic hazard. Hazards can be removed by the city at the resident’s cost.
- Leaves should be free of tree branches and twigs as these can cause the leaf vacuums to clog. Because of their impact on production, leaf piles found to contain these items will not be picked up.
- All leaves must be placed outside fenced areas. Leaves in plastic bags will also be picked up at the curb during the scheduled program.
- Only leaves will be collected during this fall’s program. Residents are reminded that the leaf pickup program typically begins the Monday before Thanksgiving each year, while the citywide household trash and brush pickup programs are held during April and May.

It is nice that they want to pick up leaves, but mulching them is better for the soil. However, if I wanted to put them out to be picked up, I would not want to do in after New Years in the dead of winter and if I put them out now, it would kill the grass while waiting.
Mike Williams 224 says
I cannot say I agree with the schedule. Seriously is someone going to leave their leaves laying in piles from raking time which is now until January 7th? Those poor people out west will be waiting forever….thank goodness I’m over here on East Drive. Could the pickup not be completed in 4 weeks?
John Huotari says
Sorry, but I don’t know what accounts for the length of the schedule, but I will try to find out.
Ellen Smith says
This is the way the schedule has been for quite a few years. The work is done by a contractor. As I understand it, the city public works department pays the contractor for one crew to work its way across the city. Apparently, contracting for a second crew to accelerate the schedule would cost more. Something like that was done one of the years that I was on city council. With the city budget as tight as it is, that hasn’t happened again. However, city crews do move some leaves “off schedule” in order to resolve problems.
Ideally, crews would cover the whole city more than once during the leaf season, but you can bet that would cost even more than adding a second crew to speed up the process.
The best thing to do with leaves is to compost them or use them as mulch on your own property, but not everyone can do that. If you bag your leaves and put them out with your weekly trash, they will be picked up by the trash collectors and taken to the landfill. I don’t like that, because I don’t like the idea of entombing leaves in a landfill. I believe that if residents take leaves to the Waste Connections and put them in the proper bin, they will be sent to a “green waste” facility, same as the leaves that get pulled off the street.
I know that there are some energetic individuals who will pick up other people’s bagged leaves for use in their own composts. Unfortunately, I’m not aware of anybody who is looking for more leaf sources, but they might be findable in the wonderful world of the Internet.
John Huotari says
Thanks for the info. I do appreciate the program, but I find it easier to mulch ours.
Steve Dittner says
If I put my leaves at the curb now by the time they come to pick them up the leaves will no longer be there, they’ll be in my neighbors yard and the grass will be dead where it sat. Every year, except one, I have had to haul off my own leaves. This program works for the fortunate ones (look where they pick up first) and not for the rest of us. I don’t know about the rest of you, but my trees are bare….
John Huotari says
That seems to be a consistent concern. I wonder if the city staff is aware of it. I’ll try to check on that.
