Scott Cummings, who led West to a Class 5A state championship in 2014, has been named head football coach at Oak Ridge High School.
Joe Gaddis announced his retirement as Oak Ridge football coach in November. He has been named interim athletic director.
Oak Ridge Schools announced the appointment of Cummings, who will replace Gaddis as football coach, on Monday.
A press release said Cummings was named head football coach at Knoxville West High School in 2002.
“During his tenure at West High School, Coach Cummings became the school’s all-time leader in wins, playoff appearances, and playoff victories,” the press release said. “In 2013, Coach Cummings and his team were highly successful in earning the distinction of 2013 state championship runner-up. In 2014, Coach Cummings made a repeat appearance and led his team to a state championship. He has been named Coach of the Year five times, including two PrepXtra Coach of the Year awards, which encompasses most of East Tennessee. Knoxville West enjoyed the most success in the history of its football program under his leadership.”
The following year he moved to Cleveland, Tennessee, and took over as head coach at Cleveland High School, the press release said. In a four-year period, Cummings led a major fundraising initiative to renovate facilities.
“Coach Cummings continued earning success by leading his team to the playoffs in three of those years,” the press release said. “Wanting to return to the Knoxville area to be closer to family, he took over as head football coach at Halls High School. Prior to his arrival at Halls, they had only won eight games one time in the last decade. Under Coach Cummings’ leadership, Halls won eight games in the following two seasons. During his three-year period as Halls head coach, they made the playoffs every year, and he was named district coach of the year in 2020.”
The press release cited some of Cummings’ accomplishments:
