The U.S. Marshals Service has caught a fugitive who was being pursued when an Anderson County Sheriff’s Office deputy was hit by a vehicle on Saturday night, sending the deputy to the hospital, the ACSO said.
The fugitive, Jesse Duncan, 38, was captured Tuesday night near Harriman Highway by the U.S. Marshals Service, the ACSO said.
The deputy, Stephen Carroll, has been released from the hospital, and he is “recovering nicely,” the ACSO said.
“He is grateful for all of the thoughts and prayers from everyone,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
Duncan had been pursued this weekend by Carroll and others on Tri County Boulevard in Oliver Springs when Carroll was hit by a vehicle, the ACSO said. His leg was broken, and it was repaired during surgery this week.
WYSH Radio in Clinton reported that Duncan was a federal fugitive being sought by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office. He has been booked into the Anderson County Detention Facility on new charges of evading and resisting arrest, and was being held on those charges as well as for federal authorities as of Wednesday morning.
BBB-TV reported that Duncan was stopped on Saturday by Anderson County deputies in the Norwood community of Oliver Springs. He fled the scene on foot. During the ensuing pursuit, which involved K-9 tracking teams and numerous agencies, Carroll was struck by a car on Tri County Boulevard.
On Monday, WYSH reported that the crash occurred at about 10:40 p.m. Saturday, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Carroll was directing traffic as part of a K-9 search of the area.
Duncan was reportedly being sought by federal authorities after he recently “walked away†from a halfway house in Knoxville, WYSH said.
Officials said no charges are pending against the driver who struck Carroll. The driver was not hurt in the incident, but his passenger was treated at an area hospital for injuries sustained in the crash.
