There will be a drive-by celebration to honor graduates at Oak Ridge High School this afternoon (Tuesday, May 26).
The drive-by celebration is scheduled from 3 to 3:30 p.m. on Providence Road. It’s a student-led event, not an official school event.
There are some rules for the celebration:
- Don’t congregate in the parking lots. Organizers are asking everyone to participate in the six-foot rule.
- If you are a community member driving by, organizers said the traffic flow must continue. “You cannot stop your car and get out to talk to seniors,” organizers said. “You have to keep driving, although you are allowed to drive slowly.”
- Seniors must stay six feet apart when standing on sidewalks. Entrances and exits to parking lots and bus loops must not be blocked.
- Masks are highly recommended.
Seniors will stand on the sidewalk of Providence Road in caps and gowns between the starting and ending points in the map shown above. Students will have physical distance between them, standing on marks on the sidewalk.
Drivers are asked to begin at the starting point shown in the map above. There will be signs to help direct traffic and to remind drivers that they cannot stop in the road, organizers said. You can drive by any time between 3 and 3:30 p.m. Seniors have been asked to make posters with their names on them to make it easier for people driving by to recognize them.
A volunteer band will be set up, playing traditional Oak Ridge songs, organizers said.
The celebration will continue rain or shine, unless the weather is dangerous, organizers said.
The celebration coincides with the laptop pickup day at the high school and Graduation Celebration drawings.
