The Oak Ridge Community Band has a “Tennessee Tribute” concert on Sunday.
The concert is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, February 16, at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center at 1450 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
“This performance will be a celebration of the rich musical heritage of Tennessee and will also feature guest director George Hayden,” a press release said. “Also, with Valentine’s Day on Friday, treating your special somebody by attending Sunday afternoon’s ORCB concert is a great way to celebrate this special weekend.”
George Hayden, band director at Montgomery Ridge Intermediate School in Maryville, will conduct the Community Band in Gary Gilroy’s “Three Stars of Tennessee,” the press release said.
Hayden, who is also the music director at Central United Methodist Church in Maryville, has degrees from the University of Tennessee and from Lincoln Memorial University. His bands have received more than 100 superior ratings, and Hayden is a member of numerous professional groups, the press release said. He is a contributing editor for “The Instrumentalist” and has presented professional development workshops, clinics, and classes at the Midwest Clinic, the California All-State Band Conference, and at universities including UTK, UTC, Western Kentucky, ETSU, and Carson Newman. He was recently nominated to conduct the California All-State Junior Band in 2022.
Other selections on the “Tennessee Tribute” program will be directed by Shaun Salem and will include Pierre LaPlante’s “American Riversongs,” Salem’s own composition “Lakeway Tribute,” and Jay Dawson’s arrangement of “Tennessee Salute” featuring “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” “Wabash Cannonball,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” the lovely “Tennessee Waltz,” and the favorite of Tennessee Vol fans “Rocky Top.” Also on the February 16 program will be Andrew Boysen’s “Kirkpatrick Fanfare,” Frank Ticheli’s “Cajun Folk Songs,” and Brant Karrick’s toe-tapping “Bayou Breakdown.”
The Community Band meets for rehearsals on Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 at the First Baptist Church, and area musicians who would like to join can call (865) 202-2773 for more information, the press release said.
