On Sunday, September 29, First Presbyterian Church of Oak Ridge will host the Reverend Jim Antal, a climate activist, a press release said. He will teach Sunday school at 9 a.m., following a continental breakfast, and deliver the sermon during the 10:30 a.m. worship service, the press release said.
Antal is the author of “Climate Church, Climate World: How People of Faith Must Work for Change.â€
The press release said Antal is a graduate of Princeton University, Andover Newton Theological School, and Yale Divinity School, which in 2017, honored him with the William Sloane Coffin Award for Peace and Justice.
An environmental activist from the first Earth Day in 1970, Antal was arrested multiple times in climate actions and spent jail time with Julian Bond and Bill McKibben, who wrote the foreword to Antal’s book, the press release said. (In 2013, McKibben gave a well-attended lecture on the climate crisis at Oak Ridge High School.)
Antal will also discuss his book at 2 p.m. at New Providence Presbyterian Church in Maryville, the press release said.
Walter Brueggemann, a distinguished faculty member and theologian at Columbia Theological Seminary in Atlanta, has called Antal’s book “bold,†stating that “deep-rooted boldness is required to counter the forceful ideology of the fossil fuel lobby. It is institutionally realistic: This is no generic moral appeal, but a bid to the church to take up its primal mission. It is practical: It anticipates active ways for pastors and churches to get to it.â€
