Henry Shen of Oak Ridge High School is one of four students who will represent Team USA at the International Biology Olympiad in Hungary next week.
Shen was one of four gold medalists at the USA Biology Olympiad, or USABO, at the University of California in San Diego on July 3. That’s the premier biology competition for high school students in the United States.
“After two rounds of challenging exams, 20 finalists are invited to a residential training program where they learn advanced biological concepts and exacting lab skills at the USABO National Finals,” the organization said on its website. “Ultimately, four students earn the right as Team USA to represent the USA at the International Biology Olympiad, a worldwide competition involving student teams from over 70 countries.”
Besides Shen, the other three finalists who will represent Team USA are Christopher Wang of Acton-Boxborough Regional High School in Acton, Massachusetts; Jason Zhang of Troy High School in Troy, Michigan; and Suhas Chundi of Carmel High School in Carmel, Indiana.
There were also four silver medalists and four bronze medalists in the USA Biology Olympiad.
The USA Biology Olympiad is administered by the Center for Excellence in Education.
All four members of Team USA were awarded gold medals in 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2017, the organization said. Team USA has achieved the coveted number one position in the world in 2011 and 2013, the organization said.
“The USABO looks forward to Team USA participating in the 2019 International Biology Olympiad in Szeged, Hungary, July 14 to 21,” the organization said.
