Authorities found several types of drugs—including suspected heroin, cocaine, marijuana, and hydrocodone—and arrested a Powell man in Claxton on Thursday on multiple charges of possessing drugs for sale, a press release said.

Agents from the Seventh Judicial District Crime Task Force in Anderson County were conducting surveillance around the Bread Box gas station on Edgemoor Road in Claxton when, just before 5 p.m. Thursday, they saw Kayvin Grate, 28, of Powell, conduct a hand-to-hand transaction with an unidentified male at the rear of the business, the press release said.

Immediately after that, an Anderson County Sheriff’s Office deputy arrived in the parking lot of the gas station, said the press release, which was from the office of Sheriff Russell Barker.

“Once Grate spotted the deputy’s marked vehicle, Grate turned quickly and began walking away from the gas station and into a wooded area,” the press release said. “Grate was given verbal commands to stop and was quickly detained. Prior to be detained, Grate dropped multiple items on the ground, which were determined to be a cell phone and two plastic baggies containing suspected heroin. After search of his person, a Ford key fob was recovered.”

The key fob was for a black Ford F-150 parked in Grate’s driveway on Mooncrest Lane, which is located behind the gas station, the press release said. Grate gave consent to a search of the vehicle which yielded the following suspected drugs, according to the press release: about 64 grams of marijuana, nine grams of crack cocaine, roughly 1.6 grams of cocaine, 15 hydrocodone tablets, 12 tablets of Xanax, a digital scale, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) vape sticks, and EBT (electronic benefit transfer) cards. Grate claimed ownership of the contents located in the Ford 150, the press release said.

Affidavits filed in Anderson County General Sessions Court in Oak Ridge by Kenneth Woods of the CTF contain a similar narrative.

In the press release, Barker praised the hard work of those involved in this arrest.

“The teamwork displayed by our deputies, the Task Force, and Tennessee Highway Patrol is a reflection of hard work, commitment, and sharing a common mission,” Barker said. “Together, we will continue hitting the streets and arresting those who want to infect our community with drugs.”

Grate has been charged with six counts of possession of drugs for sale and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the affidavits. The alleged drugs included heroin (about 1.2 grams), cocaine, crack cocaine, hydrocodone, alprazolam (Xanax), and marijuana, the affidavits said.

Grate was released on bond from the Anderson County Detention Facility in Clinton on Friday afternoon, according to jail records. His bond has been set at $25,000.

More information will be added as it becomes available.
