The Mad Hatter’s Arts Festival in Jackson Square on Saturday will feature arts and crafts vendors, poetry, music, food, dancers, authors, and interactive arts stations.
The free festival, the first of its kind, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s presented by Through the Looking Glass Antiques and Collectibles in Jackson Square.
A Jabberwocky Poetry Slam is scheduled at Razzleberry’s Ice Cream Lab and Kitchen from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. An open mic will start at 2 p.m. for walk-ins who didn’t sign up for the family-friendly event but want to perform.
Sixteen local songwriters will perform original acoustic music all day, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the square. There will also be musicians playing cover songs at the festival, said Linda Johnston of Through the Looking Glass.
At noon, the Oak Ridge Civic Ballet dancers will perform in the square.
Some of the interactive arts stations will be free, and there will be a charge for some. Painting with a Twist will be at the festival, Johnston said.
You will be able to take a “trip down the rabbit hole” to make a Mad Hatter hat by going to The Ferrell Shop in the square to have tea and then walking down the steps, which will be decorated, to As You Wish Sewing Studio, where you can make a hat ($10 per hat).
Brandon Davis, a well-known chalk artist in this area, will give a chalking demonstration during the festival, and there will be spin art as well.
There will be food, with a food truck and Razzleberry’s both available, Johnston said. There will also be sweets vendors at the festival, she said.
The vendors will include authors, photographers, woodworkers, and those who repurpose items.
You can come dressed as your favorite artist, masterpiece, or “Alice in Wonderland” character.
