The Secret City Radio Show next week will feature Dom Flemons, who won a Grammy Award for best folk album in 2023, a press release said.
The show will also feature Kelle Jolly, the “Tennessee Ukulele Lady,” the press release said.
The show is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Friday, April 5, at the Grove Theater, and it will be broadcast on East Tennessee radio station WDVX, 89.9 FM.
Besides winning a Grammy, Flemons has twice been nominated for an Emmy award, the press release said. It said Flemons was originally known for co-founding The Carolina Chocolate Drops. He has since crafted a long solo career reclaiming the black folk music genre and earning his place in the American Currents exhibit in the Country Music Hall of Fame, the press release said.
“He comes to Oak Ridge on the tailwinds of his latest album release, ‘Traveling Wildfire,’ which won 2023’s Grammy for Best Folk Album,” the press release said. “This is a must-see show to experience Dom’s talents as a multi-instrumentalist, storyteller, songwriter, and boundary-breaking producer of traditional folk songs, bringing them into the modern landscape of American roots music.”
The other performer, Jolly, is a Knoxville jazz icon, the press release said. She hosts WUOT’s “Jazz Jam,” and she will join the April 5 show with her own storytelling style of southern folk traditions.
“The Secret City Radio Show will present these notable and award-winning musicians, along with the community-enrichment initiative, The Periodic Tables, to commemorate The Oak Ridge 85 and build upon the story that is uniquely Oak Ridge,” the press release said.
You can join host Chad Beauchaine at 7 p.m. by tuning in to WDVX, or you can experience the live presentation and special “off-air” performance by being a part of the studio audience, the press release said. Tickets are available online at wdvx.com or at the box office the day of the show.
