Oak Ridge is in the middle of hosting three championship regattas this month.
The regattas began May 12-14 with the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Championship. SMU (Southern Methodist University) of Dallas won all four races at the AAC Women’s Rowing Championship and captured the team title for the third consecutive season, according to Rowing News. The Mustangs finished with 168 points to finish first, while Tulsa placed second with 140. UCF (University of Central Florida) was third with 112 points.
Those three teams were in the top three last year also, with SMU, the champion, powering away from UCF and Tulsa in an intense matchup, a press release said.
This weekend’s regatta is the American Collegiate Rowing Association (ACRA) Championship.
“This premier event also draws rowers from prestigious universities and colleges across the nation, as they vie for supremacy in the world of collegiate rowing,” the press release said. “Last year’s standouts, the University of Michigan and Purdue University, will battle it out for a top spot once more.”
The final regatta this month is the Scholastic Rowing Association of America National Championship on May 26 and 27. It will be a large gathering of the most talented high school rowers from across the country, the press release said.
The regattas are hosted by Oak Ridge Rowing Association.
“Oak Ridge is honored to host these three prestigious regattas, showcasing our city’s dedication to the sport of rowing and our commitment to providing a world-class rowing experience,” said Katy Watt, Explore Oak Ridge President. “We invite rowing reporters and enthusiasts to join us in celebrating the extraordinary talent, fierce competition, and unforgettable experiences that await in Oak Ridge this May.”
More information will be added as it becomes available.
