You can learn about Oak Ridge history at Jackson Square on Saturday.
The free program is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 14. It is organized by the Manhattan Project National Historical Park.
“Join a park ranger for a walk through Jackson Square,” the National Park Service said.
The program will begin in the upper parking lot of Jackson Square in front of the fountain.
“During the program we will discuss how routine, tradition, and the comforts of home helped keep Oak Ridge residents focused on the mission rather than their hardships,” the NPS said. “The program will also include a walk to the Alexander Inn Guest House and the Chapel on the Hill.”
Oak Ridge was part of the Manhattan Project during World War II. That was a top-secret federal program to build the world’s first atomic weapons, before Germany could.
The project’s programs, people, and facilities are commemorated in a three-site national park. Besides Oak Ridge, the sites are Hanford, Washington, and Los Alamos, New Mexico.
Jackson Square is located at 243 Jackson Square in Oak Ridge, three blocks north of the Oak Ridge Turnpike.
If you have questions about the program or need directions, visit the Visitor Center Desk within the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge at 461 West Outer Drive in Oak Ridge or contact the park at (865) 485-1942.
More information will be added as it becomes available.
