Three Ohio residents died in a two-vehicle crash on Edgemoor Road at Old Emory Road in Claxton on Friday, July 22.

The three Ohio residents were all in the same vehicle, a 2018 Honda CRV, and they were all from Mansfield, Ohio, according to a preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The driver was Peter Webel, 75, and the two passengers were Linda Webel, 76, and Frieda Gottschling, 80.

The other vehicle, a 2004 GMC Sonoma, was driven by a juvenile male from Knoxville.

The THP said the GMC driven by the juvenile was traveling west on Edgemoor Road when it hit the Honda driven by Peter Webel as he turned onto Edgemoor Road to go east. The GMC struck the Honda on its driver’s side, and it was flipped over onto its roof.

The Webels and Gottschling died in the crash, according to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office. The juvenile was airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, where he was in serious condition after the crash.

Charges are pending against the juvenile, according to the THP.

More information will be added as it becomes available.
