Keys Fillauer is seeking to be re-elected to the Oak Ridge Board of Education in November.

Fillauer has served on the school board for 19 years, and he has served as chair for the last 11 years, a press release said. He also currently serves as vice president of the Tennessee School Board Association Board of Directors, the press release said.

Fillauer is a retired Oak Ridge teacher and coach. He taught and coached at Robertsville Junior High for 27 years and at Oak Ridge High School for four years. Fillauer has been recognized as a member of the All Tennessee School Board, as a Tennessee Teacher of the Year, and Freedom Foundation Award winner, and he received the Governor’s Outstanding Tennessean Award, the press release said.

Fillauer has also received the Service Above Self award from the Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club, the press release said. He is a member of the Oak Ridge Sports Hall of Fame and the Anderson County Hall of Fame.

The press release said Fillauer serves as president of a property management business in Cleveland, Tennessee.

He is involved in many fundraising efforts, especially for the Ronald McDonald House, the press release said.

Fillauer was appointed by Judge Don Elledge and serves as the foreman of the Anderson County Grand Jury.

“As an educator for over 30 years, a Board of Education member for 19 years, and as a parent of a student who entered the Oak Ridge Schools as a kindergartener and now is finishing his last year of his PhD in Clinical Psychology at the Michael DeBakey Veterans Hospital in Houston, Texas, I feel I have a vested interest in helping the schools continue to excel in providing an outstanding education for the young people of Oak Ridge,” Fillauer said in the press release. “I am more than ever committed to keeping the quality of education in Oak Ridge a drawing card for new residents as well as giving every student an opportunity to prepare themselves for a career, college, or life successes.”

The press release said one of the most important jobs of the school board during this unprecedented time (of the pandemic) has been the health and safety of Oak Ridge teachers and students.

But there are still great things happening in Oak Ridge Schools and the community, Fillauer said.

“I will continue the strong working relationship with City Council, promoting the great teachers and students in our system, and seeing that the standards that have been set for our school district reflect strong growth for our district and encourage students to realize their dreams,” he said. “Yes, there are challenges, but I am committed to keep the standards set for our schools at the highest level.”

Fillauer does not have an opponent, and he said he will not fundraise and spend money on signs or advertising.

Fillauer said he is available to answer questions, and you can contact him on Facebook or by email at [email protected].
