Local organizations, congregations celebrating community unity

Community Unity Celebration has events this week. During the celebration, local organizations and congregations are working together to offer opportunities for residents of Oak Ridge and surrounding areas to come together to get to know each other and build community, a press release said.

The Celebration kicked off with the Human Rights Rally on Saturday, January 18, and it will end with the World Day of Prayer on Friday, March 6.

“Please join us as you can!” the press release said.

Here is more information about the events:

Women’s Interfaith Dialogue of Oak Ridge—Monday, February 3

The Women’s Interfaith Dialogue group will meet on Monday, February 3, at the Jewish Congregation of Oak Ridge (101 West Madison). The doors open at 10:45, and the program will begin at 11 am. Gay Marie Logsdon will speak about taking charge as a medical advocate on the basis of her own experience as well as that of family and friends over more than 30 years. The urgency to speak about medical advocacy grew out of months of in-patient and out-patient medical care, torrents of insurance claims, and gradual recovery following a head-on car wreck in 2016, the press release said.

People’s Supper—Tuesday, February 4

The People’s Supper will be held at the Grove Theater (123 Randolph Road) at 6 p.m. “The purpose of the supper is to invite the community to share a meal together at the beginning of a political year that could potentially divide us if we’re not committed to unity,” the press release said. “We will also talk about faith harmony and unity, as well as other differences that can sometimes divide us—like race and economic class. Our goal is not to emerge the same as everyone else, but to feel like we have heard and been heard by our neighbors who welcome us just as we are. We believe we’re stronger together and the dinner will be designed to preserve our unity as a community despite our differences.” You can reserve a spot at https://ormaoakridge.com/suppers.

Music Celebration—Thursday, February 6

The Oak Ridge High School’s Resonance ensemble, area choirs, and others will perform in a music celebration of and for our community. “Join us for an evening of music at the Historic Grove Theater (123 Randolph Road) at 7 p.m.,” the press release said.

Church Women United—Friday, February 7

Church Women United will meet in in Columbus Hall at the east end of the school campus at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 327 Vermont Avenue, in Oak Ridge. “Come meet Maggie McNally and Julia Kendrick, who will tell us about programs at the reestablished YWCA in Oak Ridge,” the press release said. Fellowship with refreshments begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by a short business meeting at noon and the program after that. For more information, contact Gay Marie Logsdon at (865) 483-7940 or [email protected].

Express Yourself: Registration Deadline, Friday, January 31

The deadline to register to perform in the Express Yourself—Youth Talent Show was the end of day on January 31, 2020. The Talent Show will be held from 3-4:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 22.
