A Clinton man has been charged with two counts of vehicular assault and driving under the influence after allegedly running a red light, hitting a vehicle with a pregnant woman inside, and then fleeing from the crash, according to court records.
The crash left the pregnant woman trapped and unable to talk to police officers because of her injuries, court records said. She was taken by ambulance to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.
The Clinton man driving the first vehicle, Bobby Lindsay, 48, has been charged with two counts of vehicular assault, DUI, possession of drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving on a revoked license (fourth offense), failure to use due care, leaving the scene of an accident, and violation of the financial responsibility law.
Affidavits filed in Anderson County General Sessions Court in Clinton said a witness saw the vehicle driven by Lindsay run a red light in Clinton on April 18 and hit the vehicle with the pregnant woman inside, leaving the woman trapped. Lindsay then jumped out of the first vehicle and ran off, the witness said.
Clinton Police Department Officer Aubrey Chapman said there was a glass pipe, scale weight, and a red pill identified as Pregablin in plain view on the floor board of the vehicle driven by Lindsay. An uncapped hypodermic needle was also found in the vehicle, Chapman said.
“Mr. Lindsay was apprehended shortly after,” Chapman said. “Mr. Lindsay had slurred speech, staggered, stuttered, and leaned against items for support.”
A search of his bag found a spoon with white residue, tourniquet belts, several hypodermic needles, scale weight, folded foil, and several baggies, Chapman said.
“Mr. Lindsay nodded off at several points throughout the investigation,” Chapman said.
Lindsay could not provide proof of insurance and was found to have three prior offenses of driving on a revoked license, with two of those in 2013 and one in 2017, Chapman said.
“When questioned, Mr. Lindsay stated that he took unprescribed Lyrica around noon,” Chapman said. “He stated that he consumed methamphetamine the day prior.”
Lindsay gave permission to have a blood sample withdrawn, and he was taken to Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge for that procedure, according to the court records. Lindsay was then taken to the Anderson County Detention Facility in Clinton, where he has been jailed since April 18. His bond has been set at $25,000, according to court records.
A passenger in Lindsay’s vehicle had gotten out of the vehicle after the crash and waited for law enforcement on the roadside, according to the court records. The passenger refused medical treatment, the records said.
Lindsay had a status hearing scheduled in Anderson County General Sessions Court in Clinton on Wednesday.
The court records don’t say what type of injuries the pregnant woman received, and her current condition wasn’t immediately clear on Wednesday.
More information will be added as it becomes available.
