Paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, and other mixed media work showcasing the artists’ talents, imaginations, and creative visions were on display during Roane State’s 2019 Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition.
Stunning black-and-white photos, a solargram revealing the sun’s path through the sky over the course of months, and a giant wire spider dangling from a wall were among those judged by an artist who has exhibited internationally.
The 31 selections were on display in April in the O’Brien Art Gallery, located on the college’s main campus in Roane County.
“This is a great opportunity for students to get practice with submitting and exhibiting in a juried exhibition that culminates with a celebration of their hard work over the past year,” Roane State Art Professor Stacy Jacobs said.
The art show has been a tradition at Roane State for more than 14 years, Jacobs said.
Judging this year’s entries was Tatiana Potts, a native of Slovakia who creates prints, drawings, ceramics, and architectural installations crafted from folded paper. Potts received her master’s of fine arts degree in printmaking from the University of Tennessee and her bachelor’s of fine arts from the University of North Carolina at Asheville.
Her artwork is included in permanent collections in Egypt, Taiwan, Italy, and London, as well as in the United States. She talked about her work and studio practice on April 16 in conjunction with the art show.
Student winners were Steve Williams, best of show; Talitha Chafin, second place; Jordan Bishop, third place; and Archie Clark, honorable mention. Clark also received an award for outstanding achievement in art, while Chafin won the Anne Powers Promise Award, given to an artist deemed of exceptional promise.
More information will be added as it becomes available.
