Basketball: Oak Ridge boys win at Campbell County

JACKSBORO—The Oak Ridge boys basketball team picked up their second district win of the season in a 81-67 victory at Campbell County on Friday night.

The Cougars took an early lead, but the Wildcats led 22-12 by the end of the first quarter.

Oak Ridge (5-1, 2-0 District 3-AAA) outscored Campbell County 48-29 in the next two quarters to widen the lead to 70-44.

But the Cougars (0-7, 0-2) scored 23 points in the fourth quarter, compared to 11 for the Wildcats, to narrow the final score to 81-67.

Oak Ridge was led by senior JaVonte Thomas, who scored 19 points. Seniors Marcus Smith and Herbert Booker each had 15. Senior Joe Kesterson added 13, including with two three-point shots, and Jeremy Miller had 10.

Campbell County was led by the 23 points of freshman Spencer Boshears, the brother of senior Lady Cougars guard Skylar Boshears. Spencer Boshears was 10-of-16 from the free throw line, with 10 of those attempts in the second quarter. Boshears also made three three-point shots.

Nate Walden added 17 points for the Cougars, including two three-point shots.

The Wildcats started district play on Tuesday at Halls, where they beat the Red Devils 81-34.

The Oak Ridge boys and girls teams will play their first home games of the season against Karns at Wildcat Arena on Tuesday, December 4. The girls’ game starts at 6 p.m., and the boys’ game begins at 7:30. These will be the third district games of the season.

The Oak Ridge and Karns boys teams have been among the top in the district for at least the past few seasons.
