Jeff Trombly has resigned as Oak Ridge boys’ and girls’ soccer coach.

The resignation was effective immediately, Oak Ridge High School Athletic Director Mike Mullins said Tuesday.

Assistant Coach Katrina Williams will be the interim girls’ soccer coach for the rest of the season, Mullins said.

A search for boys’ soccer coach will begin as soon as possible, Mullins said.

It’s not clear why Trombly resigned. Oak Ridge Today has not been able to reach Trombly for comment, but we will update this story when we can.

Four seasons ago, Trombly replaced Jason Schmieg, who resigned in July 2014 after being named girls’ head soccer coach a year earlier, in July 2013. Schmieg resigned in 2014 less than a month after Oak Ridge boys’ coach Jon Day resigned to become head coach at Christian Academy.

Trombly has coached both the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams since then, with the girls playing in the fall and the boys in the spring.

Under Trombly, the girls finished as District 3-AAA runner-up in 2015 and made it to the Region 2-AAA semifinals. They won the District 3-AAA championship in 2016 and also made it to the Region 2-AAA semifinals that year. They are 9-6-1 this year and 3-1 in District 3-AAA.

The boys’ team was 14-6-2 this past spring and 9-0 in District 3-AAA. It was the third year in a row that the boys were undefeated in the district. The boys also made it to the Class AAA sectional this spring for the third consecutive year. (The sectional games determine who plays in the state tournament.)

The Oak Ridge girls’ soccer team has one regular-season non-district game remaining this fall. It’s at home against Bearden at 7 p.m. October 3. The girls’ soccer team played two games this week after Trombley’s resignation, and Williams has been coaching the girls. The first game was at Karns, a 6-1 district win on Wednesday, and the second was against Hardin Valley, a 5-0 loss at home on Thursday.

District playoffs start October 9.

A biography posted on Oak Ridge Wildcats said Trombly is a long-time youth coach in East Tennessee, where he has served in numerous coaching and administrative capacities during the past 20 years. Trombly played varsity soccer at the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh, where he was a starting center-back for four years and team captain for two.

More information will be added as it becomes available.
