UCOR on Wednesday presented awards to five small businesses to recognize their “exceptional efforts” in supporting UCOR’s cleanup contract on the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Reservation, a press release said.
UCOR, or URS | CH2M Oak Ridge LLC, is a partnership of AECOM and CH2M. The company is responsible for cleaning up East Tennessee Technology Park, a former gaseous diffusion plant that DOE is converting into a private sector industrial park. It also performs cleanup work at other locations on the Oak Ridge Reservation.
“As always, our small business subcontracting work force constantly exceeds expectations, so it is difficult to select just a few to recognize,†said Freda Hopper, UCOR small business program manager. “This year’s winners have shown consistently exceptional performance and reinforce all the reasons we rely so heavily on small businesses for so many functions in our project.â€
The subcontractors were honored at an awards breakfast held in Oak Ridge on Wednesday, August 16, a press release said. Christy Jackiewicz, acting director, DOE Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization, was the guest speaker. The ceremony also included comments from Ron Slottke, UCOR project services and support director, and Jay Mullis, acting manager of the DOE Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management.
Here are the businesses that were recognized:
Small Business of the Year:Â Strategic Resource Alliance, which provides professional consulting and project specific services in the areas of training programs, waste management, transportation, and engineering services.
HUBZone Small Business of the Year:Â ESG Construction Inc., a General and Electrical contractor specializing in design-build construction management with an emphasis on personal and job site safety.
Woman-Owned Small Business of the Year:Â Scientific Sales Inc, a multi-line distributor specializing in laboratory equipment, supplies and chemicals, environmental supplies, and emergency response products.
Veteran-Owned Small Business of the Year:Â Alliance Scaffolding Inc., a full-service provider of scaffolding and work platform solutions.
Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business of the Year:Â Premier Contracting Technical Services Inc., a full service integrator with access to specialized professionals and craft on an as needed basis. Areas of expertise include construction management, design, engineering, project management, quality assurance, safety, and asbestos material handling/removing; hazardous waste removal; air, water, or soil remediation; and underground utility location.
From contract inception to date, UCOR has subcontracted $862 million of its work, with 79 percent of that going to small businesses, the press release said. UCOR’s work includes demolition of the gaseous diffusion facilities, management of an on-Reservation waste disposal cell, surveillance and maintenance of unneeded facilities, and soil remediation.
