Dick’s Sporting Goods now open in Oak Ridge

 

Dick’s Sporting Goods is now open at Main Street Oak Ridge, and the new store had a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday. A grand opening featuring former University of Tennessee football player Derek Barnett is scheduled for this weekend.

The store, roughly in the area where Sears used to be between Walmart and the U.S. Post Office on South Tulane Avenue, is 35,000 square foot. It sells equipment for team sports, footwear, apparel, hunting and fishing gear, and bicycles and fitness equipment, said Brian Johnson, community marketing manager for Dick’s Sporting Goods.

The store offers top national brands and in-store services such as a glove steamer, a gate analysis for runners and walkers, an archery lane to test bows, and bow stringing, Johnson said.

There are about 62 employees, both full-time and part-time, Johnson said.

He said many Oak Ridge customers shopped at Dick’s Sporting Goods in West Knoxville.

“Now they’ve got it here,” Johnson said. “Oak Ridge is a thriving market. Oak Ridge is an outdoor community.”

The store has a selection of items that could appeal to those who travel to Oak Ridge to take part in outdoor recreation events such as all-terrain vehicle rides, regattas (rowing races), 5k races, and mountain bike rides and races. Some of those include a selection of canoes and kayaks, mountain and road bicycles, and hunting and fishing gear.

“I think we’ll be able to serve those customers very well,” Johnson said.

Among the items found in the store are sports clothing, shoes, and cleats; golf, tennis, and weightlifting equipment, elliptical machines and treadmills; yoga and home gym equipment; boxing and martial arts gear; bicycles and biking gear; recreational boating equipment that can be towed, swimsuits, and life preservers; game gear; chairs, canopies, coolers, camping cots, and tents; and volleyballs, footballs, basketballs, and baseball equipment.

Dick’s Sporting Goods is the third of eight new stores to open at Main Street Oak Ridge, the 58-acre project to redevelop the former Oak Ridge Mall in the center of the city. Two others that have already opened are rue21, a teen fashion retailer, and maurices, a women’s clothing store. The five other stores that are opening at Main Street Oak Ridge are Electronic Express, PetSmart, Rack Room Shoes, T.J. Maxx, and Ulta.

 

Oak Ridge Board of Education Vice Chair Bob Eby made the first purchase at the new Dick’s Sporting Goods store on Tuesday. He bought a University of Tennessee Volunteers football that he plans to have autographed by Jeff Hall of Knoxville. Hall was the kicker on the national championship UT team in 1998, and he is the all-time leading scorer for the Volunteers football team, Eby said. The autographed football will be auctioned off at KFI (Keys Fillauer Invitational), a fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House, Eby said.

Dick’s Sporting Goods will have a three-day grand opening celebration from June 30 to July 2. Special guest Derek Barnett, a former Tennessee defensive end who now plays for the Philadelphia Eagles, will be at the store from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 1.
