Reminder: The second year of Arts & Antiques in the Square kicks off Saturday, April 29, in Jackson Square.
You can have items appraised at the kickoff. The appraisals will be done by Case Antiques Inc. of Knoxville. It’s the Tennessee Treasures Appraisals Fair, which is part of the April 29 kickoff of Arts & Antiques in the Square. Items can be appraised for $10 per item, or $50 for six items. The appraisals will be done from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 29, in Jackson Square.
“Browse our shops and Arts & Antiques vendors while your items are appraised,” the Jackson Square Merchants Association said. If you have furniture to be appraised, you don’t have to bring it. You can bring photos or send them in advance.
Arts & Antiques in the Square itself is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 29.
The series is usually, but not always, held on the last Saturday of the month. The events highlight the arts: dance, music, visual arts, and theater. They also allow vendors to showcase and sell their products.
“We’re trying to revitalize Jackson Square to its former glory,” said Linda Johnston, owner of Through the Looking Glass Antiques and Collectibles. “This used to be where everybody came.”
Vendors at this year’s April 29 kickoff can be either for-profit or non-profit organizations. They can showcase their programs or sell items that they’ve made, written, painted, or “re-purposed.” There is a $10 vendor fee for nonprofit organizations for a 10-foot by 10-foot space, and a $20 fee for for-profit groups. Vendors are expected to bring their own table and tent. They will keep 100 percent of their sales.
Vendors could, for example, sell art, woodwork, photography, or crafts.
Antiques don’t only have to come from dealers, Johnston said. They could also come from estates.
Season registration is also available. This year’s events are scheduled from April 29 to October 28.
Proceeds from the April 29 kickoff will benefit the Jackson Square Merchants Association. The fundraiser will be used for more artistic endeavors, Johnston said. Among the proposals in the planning stages: movies in the square, and possibly using vacant spaces for art classes.
“There’s a lot that could be done here to bring it back to what it used to be,” Johnston said.
The Jackson Square Business Association said it is looking for quality vendors to join the series, including with locally made artisan products, antiques, vintage, and “up-cycled items.”
“We’re trying to celebrate the talent we have here,” Johnston said.
Up next in the Arts & Antiques in the Square series is Mamapalooza. It’s scheduled for May 13, and it’s for “all things mom-related,” including clothing and beauty products.
