While advancements in radiation therapy help to target cancerous tumors and affected areas with a greater sense of accuracy, normal tissue can still be impacted by the treatment.
Fortunately, the use of hyperbaric oxygen, or HBO, therapy can provide significant healing treatments for those dealing with a radiation injury.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one of several advanced treatment options offered at the Methodist Wound Treatment Center, a press release said. This specialized treatment works in three major ways: It stimulates the formation of new blood vessels, improves the flow of oxygen into tissues, and increases the formation fibrous tissues. In short, HBO therapy allows for an increase of 10 times in plasma oxygen concentration, thereby accelerating the wound healing process, the press release said. It is the only modality proven to effectively treat radiation wounds.
