ORAU recently welcomed Arizona State University and Yale University as its newest sponsoring institutions during the 72nd annual meeting of its Council of Sponsoring Institutions. Oakland University and Villanova University were named new associate members.
“We are honored to have these four institutions joining our growing university consortium,†said Andy Page, ORAU president and chief executive officer. “Membership in ORAU’s consortium broadens the already diverse opportunities these universities provide for students and faculty researchers in many critical areas of science and technology.â€
ORAU includes 120 sponsoring institutions across the nation and in England. Now in its 70th year, ORAU originally was formed under the auspices of the Oak Ridge Institute for Nuclear Studies and consisted of 14 southern academic institutions.
An ORAU sponsoring institution is a nonprofit institution of higher learning granting doctoral degrees in multiple science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM, fields. Associate members are institutions of higher learning offering bachelor’s, master’s, or a limited number of doctoral degrees in the STEM fields.
Established in 1885, Arizona State University, or ASU, has evolved to consist of five campuses throughout metropolitan Phoenix—with Tempe maintaining the largest enrollment—and a campus at Lake Havasu City. ASU has an enrollment of 71,946 students. In 2016, ASU was recognized by U.S. News & World Report for the second consecutive year as the most innovative school in the United States. The public university is one of the nation’s “top producers†of Fulbright faculty scholars and fifth in the nation for student scholars, according to the 2016 Chronicle of Higher Education. ASU has emerged as the country’s fastest-growing research university among those with $100-plus million in annual research expenditures.
In three centuries of existence, Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, has many notable alumni, including five U.S. presidents, 19 justices of the U.S. Supreme Court, 52 Nobel laureates, and 247 Rhodes Scholars. It is the third-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. The private university is a major research institution composed of three components: Yale College, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and 13 professional schools. It has an enrollment of 12,300 students.
Oakland University, located in southeastern Michigan, has an enrollment of 20,500 students. It offers 270 degree and certificate programs. This public institution was established in 1957. In 2016, the Oakland University School of Business Administration was listed in U.S. News and World Report as “Best Grad School†under the specialty of Best Part-Time MBA Programs. It holds elite accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International. The 2016 edition of the Princeton Review highlighted the School of Business Administration in its “Best Business Schools†listing. Oakland University has forged productive partnerships with Fortune 500 companies, government agencies and other educational institutions to expand research opportunities for its students and faculty.
Villanova University includes six colleges: College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, School of Business, College of Engineering, College of Nursing, College of Professional Studies, and Charles Widger School of Law. The School of Business was ranked at the top of the Best Undergraduate Business Schools listing by Bloomberg Businessweek. It is ranked third in “Best Economic Value†by The Economist. Eleven students from Villanova University are overseas teaching and/or conducting research as Fulbright Award recipients for 2016-2017. The university, which has an enrollment of 10,842 students, was ranked number one in the nation as a “top producer†of Fulbright students in 2016. Located in a suburban community near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the university is a Roman Catholic institution founded in 1842 by the Order of Saint Augustine.
