The bicyclist who died in the Sunday afternoon crash between a bicycle and a small sport utility vehicle has been identified as Verne Gilbert, 85, of Oak Ridge, authorities said.
The crash was reported at about 1:50 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Oak Ridge Turnpike, or Highway 58, and Blair Road, or State Route 327, in west Oak Ridge. That’s just east of East Tennessee Technology Park, the former K-25 site.
Gilbert’s identity was not included in a City of Oak Ridge news release Sunday evening at the request of the family, a Monday afternoon press release said.
“They asked us to give them time to notify other family members,” the Monday press release said.
“There will be no further updates on this incident today,” the press release said. “The investigation is ongoing.”
On Sunday, the city said the driver of the small sport utility vehicle, Wanda Lowery, 74, of Kingston, was not injured, and authorities had not decided whether to file charges.
The Sunday press release said that U.S. Department of Energy employees who were nearby when the crash occurred helped provide immediate medical aid to the bicyclist. The Oak Ridge Fire Department and the Anderson County Emergency Medical Service also responded to render medical aid.
The Clinton Police Department responded to the crash to help the Oak Ridge Police Department with crash reconstruction. The Roane County Sheriff’s Office and the Oak Ridge Public Works Department responded to assist with traffic control. Roane County District Attorney General Russell Johnson also responded to help with the crash investigation, the press release said.
