The Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce’s Advocacy Committee will host a series of candidate forums during the election season this year, and the first forum, for three Anderson County Commission candidates, will be in July.
That first forum will be for candidates running in the special election for Anderson County Commission District 8. The forum will be held from 7:30-9 a.m. Thursday, July 14, in the Joyce Conference Room at the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce, which is at 1400 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
All three candidates for the office—Myra Mansfield, Angeleque McNutt, and Phil Yager—have indicated that they will be present for the forum, a press release said. All candidate forums are free and open to the public.
Stacy Myers, president and chief executive officer of Advanced Management Inc. and chairman of the Chamber’s Advocacy Committee said: “We appreciate the desire the candidates have to serve the community on the Anderson County Commission. We are pleased to have all three plan to participate in the forum on July 14 to allow the community to learn more about each of them.â€
In 2015, McNutt was appointed by the Anderson County Commission to fill the seat vacated by Robin Biloski until the next Anderson County general election, which is August 4, 2016. The District 8 commissioner represents Oak Ridge residents living in the Emory Valley, Hendrix Creek, and Woodland voting precincts. (The Anderson County Commission has two seats per district, and Myron Iwanski is the other District 8 commissioner; Iwanski’s seat is not up for election in August)
The District 8 candidates will be given the opportunity to give both an opening and closing statement, the press release said. Audience members may submit questions in writing at the forum. Questions must be addressed to all candidates. Chamber staff may combine questions of a similar focus or topic. Questions will not be shared with candidates in advance.
The moderator for the forums will be Gene Patterson of Consolidated Nuclear Security. Patterson is a former news anchor.
