Whether you’re out for an early-morning walk or driving home from work along Melton Hill Lake, it is clear to see that rowing season has begun in Oak Ridge. Rowing teams from all over the northern United States and parts of Canada are beginning to arrive in Oak Ridge for spring training and racing.
This weekend, the University of Louisville will host its annual Cardinal Invitational Regatta. Twelve of the nation’s best NCAA Division I women’s rowing teams will compete on March 12-13 at the Oak Ridge Rowing Association on Melton Hill Lake.
The 2016 Cardinal Regatta will host the following rowing teams:
- University of Louisville
- University of Minnesota
- University of Central Florida
- Kansas University
- University of Notre Dame
- University of Virginia
- Clemson University
- University of Alabama
- University of Michigan
- Michigan State University
- University of Oklahoma
- West Virginia University
Crews will sprint two kilometers (1.25 miles) from the starting line at the former Riverside Grille to the finish tower in Melton Lake Park. The best spectator viewing will be from the peninsula at the Oak Ridge Marina, or by biking alongside the races from start to finish along the riverside greenway path. Racing will begin at 9 a.m. March 12 and continue through noon March 13. Food and drinks will be available on site.
Oak Ridge Rowing Association is the local host of the regatta and can be contacted for more information. Explore Oak Ridge can respond to general questions about rowing and visitors to Oak Ridge.
More information will be added as it becomes available.

So happy we installed the changing rooms at the marina. I regret some thought it a boondoggle. Apparently Oak Ridge is a national venue for these types of events. Such a small price to pay for the prestige our city enjoys.
