The League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge has a holiday luncheon on Sunday, December 6, and the public is invited, a press release said. The luncheon is at Burchfield’s at the Doubletree Hotel in Oak Ridge.
The invitation is being extended to anyone interested in learning how the LWVOR and other League chapters across the state strive to make democracy work for Tennessee residents, the press release said.
The invited guest speaker, Stewart Clifton, will discuss the League’s work in Tennessee on issues such as education, climate change, homelessness, hazardous waste, mental health, immigration, and others that affect our families and communities, the release said.
It said Clifton is an attorney and registered lobbyist with a practice focused exclusively on nonprofit organizations that seek to understand and impact public policy by providing advocacy and/or monitoring services for several health, social welfare, equal justice, and environmental groups including the League of Women Voters, Tennessee Association for the Education of Young Children, and Alzheimer’s Tennessee Inc., among others.
Clifton received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Vanderbilt, and he is also a graduate of Vanderbilt Law School. He has been a member of the Tennessee Bar since 1977. He has served as executive director, legal counsel, and public policy director for Tennessee nonprofit groups prior to establishing a government relations practice.
The holiday luncheon will begin with social time, with a cash bar at 12:30 p.m. The luncheon will start at 1 p.m., with the speaker to follow. The cost to attend is $25 and can be paid with cash or a check at the door. The menu will include Burchfield’s buffet with omelet and crepe bar, seared salmon with béarnaise sauce, cornish hen, assorted vegetables, salad, dessert, coffee, and tea, the release said.
The Doubletree is located at 215 South Illinois Avenue in Oak Ridge. Reservations are needed and may be made by calling (865) 482-3153.
