The Oak Ridge Public Library will host an open house on Saturday, August 29, from 3 to 5 p.m. All Oak Ridgers are invited to visit the Library to enjoy the newly renovated lights and to learn about two new services—digital magazines and streaming video.
Patrons with an active library card can now choose from 20 monthly magazines to read on their computer, phone, or other mobile device, a press release said. ESPN The Magazine is for the next generation of fans who want to stay on top of their favorite sport. Game Informer is the largest computer and video game magazine, with knowledge and insight into the games market. Taste of Home features real food from real home cooks, all made with easy, affordable ingredients. To read these digital titles and other magazines, the free Nook reading app and a free Barnes and Noble online account are required.
Over 200 streaming videos are available to check out free of charge. Documentaries like “Forks Over Knives,” theatrical performances by Cirque du Soleil, classic films like Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho,” or thrillers like “Sharknado,” are all available to borrow for a time period of up to seven days. A Wi-Fi connection is recommended for streaming videos. Data charges may apply depending on your device and mobile service provider.
Both digital magazines and streaming videos are available on the Library’s website, www.orpl.org. After signing in with their account number and PIN, patrons can borrow up to three electronic titles and three magazines at a time. All digital titles automatically expire at the end of the lending period, so there are no late fees!
Two patrons will win either a Kindle Fire HD or free DVD checkouts for one year, which will be given away at the Open House at 3:30 p.m. Entries will be accepted at the Main Desk beginning Monday, August 24. A valid library card is required to enter.
Friends of the Library will provide refreshments in the auditorium and Danny Whitson will entertain with a Magic Show for all ages at 4 p.m.
