ORNL Federal Credit Union will team up once again with Shred Company for a Community Shred Day on Saturday, August 8. Shred Day is scheduled from 9 a.m. until noon at both the Alcoa and Oak Ridge main branches of ORNL FCU.
ORNL Federal Credit Union members, as well as the public, are invited to bring any unwanted documents, especially ones containing personal information, to one of the Community Shred Day locations and have it safely and securely destroyed at no charge. A maximum of four boxes/bags per person will be accepted.
ORNL FCU’s Alcoa Branch is located at 103 Hamilton Crossing Drive. The Oak Ridge Main Branch is located at 221 South Rutgers Avenue.
According to authorities, crimes of identity theft are a growing problem as a person’s identity can easily be stolen simply by placing personal documents in the garbage rather than having them properly destroyed.
“Thieves will rummage through garbage looking for anything to create a new identity for committing crimes,†said Bronce Rodgers, vice president of loss mitigation at ORNL FCU. “The most common forms used for identity theft are credit card applications, bank statements, or completed tax forms, and the stolen information can then be used for a variety of fraudulent transactions.â€
