The Oak Ridge Community Band will play in a free concert before the fireworks show at A.K. Bissell Park on Saturday.

The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 4. Fireworks start at 10 p.m.

“Because the July 4 program traditionally attracts large crowds, come early and bring lawn chairs or blankets for good seating,” organizers said in a press release.

The concert is free, although donations are welcomed to offset band expenses. Refreshments will be available for sale.

Band leader Dale Pendley and assistant conductor Lisa Michaels have planned an outstanding July 4 program featuring former Oak Ridge Mayor Tom Beehan as narrator, guest vocalist soloists Mike Cates and Deidre Ford, alto saxophone soloist Lisa Michaels, a return appearance of guest percussionist Bill Burkhart, and a choral group of singers who along with the Community Band will be entertaining the audience with patriotic, jazz, swing, and show tunes, the press release said.

Among the program selections for July 4 are Leonard Bernstein’s “America” featuring tunes from “West Side Story,” “American Riversongs,” “The Spirit of ’76,” “Star Dust,” “Blue Moon,” and “Satchmo” featuring trumpet soloist Tim Michaels, trombone soloist Don Batchelor,” clarinet soloist Lisa Michaels, and tuba soloist Joe Williams. Still more songs include “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “A Cohan Salute,” “The Ultimate Patriotic Sing-Along,” “American Salute,” “The World Turned Upside Down,” and last but definitely not least, “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”
